The story of Wellcraft

Wellcraft began by building small wooden runabouts and skiff boats ranging from 12 to 17 feet. By the early 1960s, the company transitioned to molded fiberglass construction, a cutting-edge innovation that set the stage for decades of success.

In 1970, renowned naval architect C. Raymond Hunt designed five high-performance Deep-V hulls for Wellcraft. These hulls featured Step Lifts that raised the boat to a smooth, even plane—revolutionizing offshore handling and speed.

Introduced in 1979, the V-20 Step-Lift Fisherman featured a Deep-V center console design engineered for superior performance on the water. Its distinctive Step-Lift pattern along the hull provided enhanced lift, allowing the boat to plane smoothly and evenly, delivering both stability and speed for an exceptional fishing experience

To celebrate 25 years in business, Wellcraft launched the 248 Sportsman, a versatile walkaround boat that blended fishing functionality with family-friendly features.

In 1983, Wellcraft partnered with Scarab to launch the Scarab 377 Special Edition, a high-performance speedboat that became an icon in the boating world. Scarab boats were known for their aggressive styling and thrilling performance.

The Wellcraft 26 Scarab Center Console became a star on the hit TV show Baywatch, appearing throughout the series’ 11-year run—even after the show moved from California to Hawaii. Scarab’s name became synonymous with speed and style.

This model combined offshore capability with serious fishing features, reinforcing Wellcraft’s reputation among saltwater anglers.

The Wellcraft 355 Explorer redefined the performance cruiser category with bold styling, luxurious comfort, and offshore capability.
